In 2006, Balmoral Offshore Engineering was founded by James Milne to make buoyancy, insulation and polyurethane products for use in the offshore, defence, subsea communications and oceanographic sectors. Its subsea buoyancy modules are made to withstand the extremes of deep-water pressure and provide lift to the steel pipes that run between a drilling platform or vessel and the seabed. Balmoral says it is one of only four companies in the world that make such products. The Aberdeen firm has benefited from increased deep-sea exploration, particularly off the coast of Brazil. This has helped to drive up international sales 74% a year, from £20.2m in 2009 to £61.3m in 2011.
