Barber’s, founded in 1833, says it is the oldest surviving cheddar maker in the world. Its cheeses include the premium Barber’s 1833 Vintage Reserve, Coastal Cheddar and Wookey Hole Cave Aged Cheddar. The Somerset dairy sells to 30 countries and claims to be the number one exporter of English cheddar into America. It also has a joint venture exporting whey protein powders. International sales, excluding the joint venture, hit £10.7m last year, under fifth-generation family members Paul and Nicholas Barber, both 72.
