Since opening the doors on an award-winning care home in Gloucestershire in 1993, Mike Parsons has shown no signs of running out of steam in his mission to bring quality residential care to older people and those living with dementia. He has driven consolidation in the sector, buying more than 20 care-home companies in four years to build a business that now has 10,000 beds in 170 homes. It has been a winning run for Barchester’s owners, financier Dermot Desmond and racing magnates JP McManus and John Magnier. Sales at the company have grown 76% a year from £59.7m in 2003 to £327.9m in 2006.
