Bargain Booze

This Crewe-based franchise operation has set its cap at competitors like Spar and Londis. Its Thorougoods and Select Convenience brands of local newsagents and convenience grocery stores now have about 40 shops. Founded in 1981, the company is best known for the Bargain Booze chain, which specialises in selling heavily discounted beer, wine and spirits. Joint managing directors Tim Stanley and Matthew Hughes now preside over some 600 franchises, and turned in sales of £358.9m in 2007.
