The civil-engineering firm Barhale specialises in laying underground pipes for water and telecoms services. Its customers include BT, Thames Water and Severn Trent Water. Dennis Curran founded the company in 1980 and now has contracts with four large water suppliers in Britain, which account for 80% of sales. The value of these sales grew 69% a year from £22.4m in 2000 to £107.3m in 2003. This year the Walsall company launched an infrastructure support company for the rail industry. It recently opened an Irish division and has continued to diversify in other ways by setting up mechanical and electrical, recruitment and plant businesses.
