This won’t be the first company to be launched over a game of golf. When a friend told Michael Dabbs in 1999 that the firm he worked for needed someone to make deliveries, Dabbs used his savings to buy three old lorries before winning his first contract with Exel Freight Management. Today Bawdsey Haulage transports goods for WH Smith and Gillette on behalf of Exel, which is still its largest customer. The 2001 purchase of three new lorries, a warehouse to store clients’ goods, and subcontracting to other hauliers to offer national coverage have driven up sales 65% a year, from £705,000 in 2001 to £3.2m in 2004.
