BBOXX has raised almost $70m to support its goal of providing reliable, renewable electricity to 20m people living off-grid in the developing world by 2020. Its solar home systems provide a cleaner, cheaper alternative to kerosene. The 150,000 systems deployed so far in 35 countries are estimated to have offset more than 40,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions and saved customers nearly £2m on energy expenses. Founders Mansoor Hamayun, 29, Laurent Van Houcke, 30, and Christopher Baker-Brian, 31, who met at university, saw the firm’s sales more than double to £20.4m last year. It continued its rapid expansion in Africa by launching in Togo in 2017.
