If you go into a shop and find attractively packaged mini-bottles of cognac or whisky put together with chocolates for Christmas, this company may be responsible. Co-founded by Bob Russell in 1997, Beams makes bespoke novelty gifts and packaging for food and drinks companies. It also makes gift-sets under licence for companies such as Glen Moray and Absolut Vodka, which it sells direct to retailers. In 2001 it took a decision to double its sales force. This increased the number of customers from 5 to 25 in four years and helped to push up sales 79% a year, from £1.7m in 2001 to £9.6m in 2004.
