Ephraim Belcher started out as a family butcher in 1970 but rapidly expanded to become a major processor of pork products. By improving recipes and investing in a highly automated Glasgow factory, delivering both volume and quality consistency, Belcher Food won big contracts from major retailers. Belcher now claims to be the largest frozen sausage producer in the UK, having trebled its share of the UK market to 25% between 1996 and 1999. Economies of scale and weak pork prices helped Belcher achieve 73% pa profit growth, from £904,000 in 1996 to £4.7m in 1999, as turnover rose by 24% pa in the same period to £19.6m. The company recently completed a new £10m factory and cold store that will allow diversification into the rapidly growing fully-cooked meat market.
