When Transport for London required a data-management system to help co-ordinate street works to be done by different utility companies for the 2012 Olympic bid, it turned to Bell Microsystems. The Portsmouth company, founded by Alastair Bell in 1997, designs, implements and installs storage area network (SAN) systems to handle huge amounts of data. With other customers including Citigroup and Standard Chartered Bank, its sales have risen 57% a year from £2.7m in 2002 to £6.6m in 2004.
