By acquiring the rival Top Track 100 cash-and-carry firm L Batley for £100m this year, Bestway almost doubled its number of outlets to more than 50. Sir Anwar Pervez founded Bestway as a single Asian food store in London in 1962, but it has diversified in recent years. It now has a London mill that processes and packs rice. It runs an £80m cement plant in Pakistan and has a 26% stake in Pakistan’s third-largest bank, UBL. Sales totalled £1,115m in 2004, inc- luding a contribution from associated company Bestway Northern.
