Under chairman Sir Anwar Pervez, 82, Bestway has grown from a single grocery, opened in 1963, to Britain’s largest privately owned cash-and-carry group. Last year it joined forces with the fuel supplier Certas Energy to expand its share of the forecourt convenience market. The group also operates 798 Well Pharmacy stores. Favourable trading conditions in Pakistan allowed the group’s Bestway Cement and United Bank to increase their market share, helping to lift profits 15% to £558m.
