Chairman Sir Anwar Pervez, 78, has built Bestway from a single grocery store in west London, opened in 1963, to Britain’s biggest privately owned cash-and-carry group, with £2.5bn sales in 2012. The firm sells more than 35,000 products to 125,000 independent UK retailers from 62 warehouses. It recently invested £15.2m in depots in Brighton and Team Valley in Tyne and Wear, and in a chilled distribution centre in Coventry. Bestway’s other interests include cement factories in Pakistan, commercial property development, and a 51% stake in United Bank, Pakistan’s second-biggest private bank.
