Bestway has grown from a single grocery store in London’s Earls Court, opened in 1963 by chairman Sir Anwar Pervez, to become Britain’s biggest privately owned cash-and-carry group. The business operates 61 warehouses and serves 100,000 independent retailers across the country. Its other interests include cement factories in Pakistan and commercial-property development. Last year it increased its stake in United Bank, Pakistan’s second-biggest private bank, to 51%. The group’s sales grew to £2.3 billion in 2011.
