Sir Anwar Pervez founded Bestway as a single grocery store in 1963. Since then Bestway Group has grown to become one of Britain’s largest cash-and-carry operators, helped by its acquisition of rival Batley’s in 2005. The group’s other interests include the milling of food staples, cement factories in Pakistan that produce more than 5m tonnes of cement a year, and a 31% stake in Pakistan’s third-biggest bank. The group’s sales reached £1,895m in 2008, including a £344m contribution from the associated grocery wholesale business, Bestway Northern.
