Chairman Sir Anwar Pervez, 80, has built Bestway from a single grocery store in west London, opened in 1963, to Britain’s biggest privately-owned cash-and-carry group. Alongside the grocery wholesaler, it also owns 61% of United Bank, Pakistan’s second-biggest private bank, and a £500m commercial property portfolio. Last year, it added drugs wholesale and retail when it acquired the Co-Op’s pharmacy business for £620m. The 770 pharmacies are currently being re-branded as Well.
