Set up as a specialist Asian food store in west London in 1962, Bestway has grown to become a large grocery and drinks wholesaler with 28 cash-and-carry outlets in the UK. It has moved further up the supply chain with its London mill, which processes and packs rice. The company has also built an £80m cement plant in Pakistan. Bestway, which employed 1,668 staff and had sales of £724m in 2002, bought a significant stake in UBL United Bank, Pakistan’s fourth-largest bank, that year. A sister company, Bestway Northern, which files separate accounts, had sales of £283m in 2002.
