Started as a specialist Asian food store in west London in 1962, Bestway has grown to become a large grocery and drinks wholesaler with 28 cash-and-carry outlets in the UK. It has also moved further up the supply chain with its London mill, which processes and packs most types of rice from basmati to brown varieties. The company, which employed 1,468 staff and had sales of £746m in 2001, has also diversified into manufacturing cement after building an £80m cement plant in Pakistan in 1998.
