This company’s sales have grown as internet gambling has become popular. Bet365 started life in the 1970s as a chain of high-street betting shops, but moved online early this decade. The company sold its betting shops to Gala Coral in 2005 to concentrate on internet gambling. The firm now offers betting on sporting events, plus poker and casino games, to punters across 140 countries. Bet365 is based in Stoke-on-Trent, where it owns Stoke City football club. Sales reached an annualised £1,815m in 2008 under chief executive John Coates – these figures represent all money wagered by customers, rather than the company’s income from these bets.
