Betfair hit the 2m customer mark last year and claims to process more transactions a day than all of Europe’s stock markets combined. Founded in 1999 by Andrew Black and Edward Wray, its betting exchange technology allows punters to choose their own odds and bet throughout live events. It also runs poker and casino games websites and in January, it paid $50m (£30m) for the American TV Games Network. In 2006, Softbank paid an estimated £345m for a £23% stake. Sales at the London firm reached £233.6m in 2008.
