Famous for paying big bonuses to big winners, Done Brothers claims to be the world’s largest independent bookmaker and it is expanding rapidly. Chairman and founder Fred Done has opened 60 branches in the past year and now has 407 shops from Scotland to the south coast. A further 50 are planned to open by the end of the year, and the chain is being rebranded as Betfred. Sales came to £387m in 2003 and are expected to rise by £50m in 2004. The company also operates a telephone betting business under the Betfred banner – this had sales of a further £80m last year.
