Chairman Fred Done, 75, opened his first shop in 1967, using £250,000 he won betting that England would win the 1966 World Cup. Betfred now operates an online gaming service and 1,666 betting shops, about 20% of the UK total, including 322 it acquired from Ladbrokes and Gala Coral for £55m in 2016. Some of its revenues come from fixed-odds betting terminals, which would be affected by the government’s recent proposed changes to regulations.
