Betfred claims to be one of the world’s biggest independent bookmakers, with a chain of 750 betting shops across Britain, and a strong presence on the internet. The company’s online business, which includes poker, casino, bingo and betting sites, is now run under licence by a separate company based in Gibraltar. Chairman Fred Done started Betfred with his brother Peter in 1967 when they opened a betting shop in Salford. The company’s sales grew to £1,116m in 2008. This figure represents all the money wagered by customers, rather than the net income from those bets.
