Family-owned for 212 years, this Liverpool conglomerate was originally a ship operator, but has diversified into retail, distribution, financial services and marine services. Although its financial services are thriving, total group sales fell 17% to £1bn in 2017 as Bibby’s Costcutter supermarket chain was hit by the collapse of supplier Palmer & Harvey. John Cresswell, 58, took over as chief executive from Sir Michael Bibby, 55, last year.
