Simon Farr conceived the idea for this wine merchant in 1982 in the offices of a former petrol station in London’s Primrose Hill. The idea was to sell a mixture of classic fine wines, rare bottlings and wine from unusual vineyards. A few years later the business started supplying wine to local restaurants and in 1995 moved into the off-licence trade. These days, customers can buy champagne, port, cognac and other wines through the company’s website. Under managing director Michael Saunders, sales reached £144.5m in 2010.
