Bighams says its ready-made meals are designed for ‘busy cooks’ who want quality food fast. The company describes its dishes as ‘centre-plate’, meaning that the cook normally adds his or her own accompaniments, such as rice or potatoes. Bighams offers up to 60 product lines, including dishes from exotic locations such as Marrakesh and Goa. They are mainly sold through Waitrose but are also available at Harvey Nichols and Harrods under the Bighams brand. Founded by Charlie Bigham in 1996, the London company has raised its sales nearly 92% a year from £597,000 in 1999 to £4.2m in 2002.
