In 2002, the family that owns the Blackwells publishing firm was split over whether to remain independent or push for a trade sale. Chairman Nigel Blackwell won the argument and the business remains one of the world’s largest independent, privately owned academic publishers, incorporating Blackwell Publishing and Blackwell Science. In 2004, sales rose £17m to £190.9m, helped by a 25% rise in America. The firm is independent of the Blackwell family’s other business – the book retailer and library supplier Blackwell’s, ranked No 128.
