John Bloor left school at 15 and, after studying at night school, began work as a self-employed plasterer, building his first house a year later. Today his Derbyshire company Bloor Homes builds 1,800 houses each year, and he is worth an estimated £250m. In 1983 Bloor took the company down a new road, rescuing Triumph motorcycles from the liquidator and adding it to Bloor Holdings. This generated total sales of £409m in 2002, when the group employed a total of 1,455 people.
