In 1847 Edwin H Booth borrowed £80 in grocers’ goods to start up his own business. Today, the upmarket supermarket chain operates 27 stores in the north of England, with its most recent addition in Salford’s Media City. In line with other retailers that are battling the effects of the economic downturn, Booths is launching its own-brand range of products to appeal to customers seeking value. The company, which has its headquarters in Preston, also runs two high-end restaurants in Kendal and Lytham. Under chairman Edwin J Booth sales reached £268.7m in 2010.
