In business since 1847 and in the ownership of the Booth family, this Preston-based company is headed by chairman Edwin Booth. It has 26 stores across Lancashire, Yorkshire and Cumbria and offers a wide range of locally sourced produce. It tries to stock vegetables “in season” and in 2005 launched Artisan, a specialty food store and restaurant in Kendal, which champions local producers of fine foods not available in supermarkets. Sales in 2007 rose to £231m.
