The great British institution of Butlin’s celebrates its 70th birthday this year. Butlin’s was bought by Bourne Leisure from Rank in 2000 in a £700m deal, along with the Haven caravan sites, Oasis holiday villages and Warner holiday-parks businesses. The deal was backed by LGV and Candover, which sold their combined 28% stake to Bourne’s management in 2004. Chairman Peter Harris founded Bourne Leisure in 1964, when, as a young accountant, he audited a caravan park and then decided to buy it. Bourne had sales of £733m in 2004.
