No wonder John Kirkland is an avid supporter of the building industry. Bowmer & Kirkland, the Derbyshire construction and civil engineering group, set up by his grandfather in 1923, has made the family an estimated £129m. The company builds supermarkets for the likes of Sainsbury and Tesco, and its latest project is the first phase of the Royal Docks Business Park in London, which will become the capital’s largest urban business park. Bowmer & Kirkland reported an increase in sales to £498m in 2002, when it employed 1,367 staff.
