Spotting an opportunity to turn unused development land into retail spaces, Roger Wade, 53, founded Boxpark in 2010, five years after selling streetwear brand Boxfresh to Pentland, the owner of JD Sports. Backed by Sir Charles Dunstone — the Carphone Warehouse co-founder who is also behind the burger chain Five Guys — the firm opened its first pop-up shopping centre in Shoreditch in 2011. The arcades are made from repurposed shipping containers and provide semi-permanent spaces to bars and street-food vendors and shops ranging from young independents to giants such as Nike. It opened its second site in Croydon in 2016 and its third in Wembley last December, pushing up sales to £12.8m in the year to April. The Brighton-based company is now raising capital for 10 more sites over the next five years.
