Boxpark

This London firm was born when its founder spotted an opportunity to turn unused development land into retail spaces. Roger Wade, 52, had run the clothing firm Boxfresh for 17 years before selling it to the group behind JD Sports in 2005. Wade’s first pop-up mall, Boxpark, was opened in Shoreditch in 2011, backed by Sir Charles Dunstone — who is also behind the burger chain Five Guys, No 43 on this year’s table. The complexes are made from repurposed shipping containers, offering retailers, bars and street food vendors semi-permanent spaces, and hosting brands from young independents to giants such as Nike. It opened its second site in Croydon in 2016, helping lift group sales to £8.4m in the year to April 2018. Boxpark Wembley is set to open this month.
