Brakes is Britain’s largest distributor of food to the catering trade, supplying pubs, restaurants, hospitals and schools. Sales totalled £1,546m in 2003. Brakes was founded in 1958 by brothers Frank, Peter and William Brake. The firm listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1986 but was bought by the US private-equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice in 2002 for £434m.
