In 1958 brothers Frank, Peter and William Brake went into business together and are now worth an estimated £270m. Brakes has become Britain’s largest distributor of frozen food to the catering trade, supplying pubs, restaurants, schools and hospitals. The Kent company was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1986 but went private last September after being sold to the American private-equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice for a reported £434m. The company had sales of £1,389m in 2001, when it employed 8,752 people.
