The activities of Robert Brett & Sons include the extraction of sand and gravel, concrete, waste management and recycling. The Canterbury family business can trace its origins to 1909, when Robert Brett used a steam traction engine to collect flints from fields and then moved into quarrying. The company acquired Greenham Construction Materials in 2000 and Atlas Stone Products in 2001, and also operates five quarries in Virginia in America. Profits have grown 32% a year from £5m in 1998 to £11.5m in 2001.
