The name behind the high-street electronics chains Radio Rentals and Brighthouse, Carmelite Capital was formed in 1998 when the Japanese investment bank Nomura paid a reported £980m for Thorn EMI’s British businesses – some of which it has since sold on to Granada for £380m. Now owned by Terra Firma, Carmelite reported sales of £335.5m in 2004, and cut its operating losses from £63m to £17m. Employing 2,788 people, it has 103 stores and also offers credit services.
