William Hill took a practical approach to building a business – his first step when he founded Brooklyn Motors in 1935 was to construct a wooden garage in Worcestershire to work from. Now based in Redditch, the firm has outlets across the Midlands, selling new and used vehicles and offering car servicing, repair and rental. The Hill family still owns the firm, which generated sales of £163.4m in 2006 under chief executive George Foster.
