Brunner Mond says it is Britain’s sole producer of soda ash, the alkaline product used to make glass, detergents and industrial chemicals. The firm, which also has plants in the Netherlands and Kenya, was one of the companies that merged to form ICI in 1926. It became a separate group in 1991 before floating on the stock market. Then it returned to the private sector in 1998, when it was bought by CVC Capital Partners. Chaired by Peter Haslehurst, the company is now owned by Barclays, WestLB and the Wayland Investment Group, and had sales of £169.6m in 2003.
