More than 850,000 households have signed up to this green energy provider, attracted by its focus on customer service and its affordable, renewable energy. Sourcing its energy from independent, renewable generators ranging from solar, wind, and hydro to anaerobic digestion, the company claims that an average customer saves 1.3 tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere per year, the equivalent of planting 655 trees. Social media, word of mouth and referral marketing have helped win market share from incumbents, such as British Gas, in the UK’s £54bn energy market. Founded by Hayden Wood, 35, and Amit Gudka, 34, in 2014, Bulb raised £60m in August from Russian billionaire Yuri Milner’s DST Global fund, an early backer of Facebook and Deliveroo, and US hedge fund Magnetar, in a round that reportedly valued the company at more than £400m.
