Burhill, in Walton-on-Thames, which hosted the 2009 PGA EuroPro tour, is one of 10 golf clubs in the Midlands and southeast England owned by this golf and property-management company. Three of the clubs are for members only, but the remainder are “pay and play”. The company, which is owned by the Guinness family, has invested in improving clubhouse bars and dining facilities and in 2008 introduced loyalty cards that are now held by 40,000 golfers. Profits have risen 47% a year from £1.8m in 2005 to £5.8m in 2008, in large part due to sales of property.
