Simon Payne founded Cable Telecom in 1997 to provide telecoms services to businesses in southeast England. The London company has since expanded and now caters for customers like the Bank of England, Burberry and McDonald’s, with complete packages including voice, fax, broadband and data. Payne says the company’s proprietary software, which integrates billing, account management and cash collection, is central to its success, allowing it to operate with just 21 staff. Its sales grew 70% a year from £4.2m in 2000 to £12m in 2002.
