With a sewing machine and a degree in economics, Tony Caldeira was well equipped to start a business making cushions to sell at a local market. Twelve years on, the firm’s two factories supply stores such as BHS, Matalan and Homebase. It also has its own brand called The Cushion Factory. The Merseyside company is a rare success story in the declining British textiles industry. Its sales have grown 67% a year from £895,000 in 1999 to £4.2m in 2002.
