The term pre-fab has been sniffed at in the past, but modular building may be making a comeback, as shown by the success of Caledonian Building Systems. The Nottinghamshire company designs and assembles buildings using its own steel-frame components. Customers for the finished buildings, which are clad in brick, include the hotel chain Tulip Inns, the Ministry of Defence and HM Prison Service. Caledonian’s profits have risen 56% a year from £1.9m in 2001 to £7m in 2004.
