Four year-old Camco Air Conditioning leapt ahead of its competitors when it integrated software into the Mitsubishi air conditioning units it was distributing. The software enables customers to control the temperature in their buildings from a central command system. Sales have gone from £1.3m in 1994 to £8.2m in 1997. The West Midlands company has 15 employees. To encourage competition among them, contractors get to cruise around in a Ferrari for the day if they hit sales targets. So many of them met their targets, says founder Chris Harthman, that the company bought a Ferrari.
