The threat of the millennium bug to computers running complex North Sea oil and gas operations provided a major opportunity for Aberdeen-based Capelrig, which specialises in designing control systems for large industrial operations. Capelrig stole a march on competitors by offering both software and hardware solutions for millennium bug compliance. It hired staff able to cope with complex mixes of old and new systems; invested in writing bug solution guides; and set up a Millennium Test Centre. As a result it gained global contracts from blue-chip firms paying up to $7m per contract. Capelrig has driven up profits by 101% pa, from £614,000 in 1996 to £5m in 1999, when sales reached £13.4m. Capelrig is now capitalising on its relationship with large oil and gas companies to field a new generation of control systems.
