This Wakefield greeting-card retailer continues to expand, with more than 120 new stores opened in the past 18 months. Growth has mainly been organic, although the company recently made two small acquisitions. Husband and wife Dean and Janet Hoyle started out selling cards from the back of a van, and now run 370 stores from Perth to Plymouth. Card Factory’s price policy – to sell most of its cards for less than £1 – has remained unchanged for a decade. Sales have grown 74% a year from £13.6m in 2003 to £72.1m in 2006.
