Carisbrooke Shipping has shown there is plenty of profit in sea transportation. The company owns half of the 36 vessels it operates, transporting industrial products around the world. Income is derived from freight fees and management charges for the ships operated on behalf of other owners. Since delisting from the Alternative Investment Market in 1999, Carisbrooke has doubled its fleet.
In 2003 it acquired a Dutch competitor, Beck Shipping, in a deal that added another nine vessels. Profits have risen 73% a year from an annualised £757,000 in 2000 to £3.9m in 2003.
