The Italian food company Carluccio’s claims to have a unique proposition – a combined restaurant and delicatessen under one roof. In addition to sales of take-home products, such as handmade biscuits, fresh olives and artisan pasta, the company says it feeds 50,000 diners every week. It now has 17 outlets across London and southeast England. Antonio Carluccio, a former TV chef, started the business in 1991 with his wife Priscilla, who is the sister of Sir Terence Conran. Its sales have grown 90% a year from £2.8m in 2000 to £19.7m in 2003.
